The remnants of the New Deal can still be seen. You don't even have to leave Lagrange County to see them! The REMC and the Lagrange Post Office were both made during that era. There is a mural inside the post office that was paid for by FDR's Administration. All over the country are examples of his massive effort to create jobs. Parks at the local, state, and national level were all made during this time. The Civilian Conservation Corps was responsible for most of the work done. The organization was comprised of thousands of single, unmarried men who wanted a source of income. They were sent all over the country. The CCC boys received a monthly stipend of $30. The workers kept $5 and the rest was sent home to help care for the families they left behind.
A well-known act that still stands is the Social Security Act. The fund and system have endured the test of time (although it has faced much strife) and can be viewed as sort of a 'monument' of those times per se. Today, millions of people rely on that fund as a source of income after retirement. According to the Social Security website, "Almost twenty million men, women, and children are now drawing benefits under this program-benefits totaling more than $1.25 billion a month." There has been talk about the fund running out recently, but for now it still stands as a testament to our past.
