The prohibition started organized crime in New York. Gangs took advantage of the alcohol
on the black market. Some people like Al Capone flooded the market with alcohol.
Many bars still had beer and other alcohol drinks hidden from the police.

When Prohibition came into effect, so too did bootlegging. Bootlegging is the manufacture of illicit alcohol. It needed help being transported, so fast cars naturally came into the picture. The alcoholic beverages were driven across state lines at top speeds. Interestingly enough, bootlegging started stock car racing. Drivers bragged about how fast they could go down back roads with the headlights off. Soon afterwards, races were held between the drivers for money. If you got caught for transporting alcohol, you were shot on sight.
