Vice Presidents hold the second-highest office possible. It is often said that, "no one remembers second place," but I think that's unfair. Vice Presidents deal with many of the same problems that presidents deal with. They also have to be ready at a moment's notice to assume office. In our history, nine vice presidents have assumed office.
John Tyler, 1841 -- Presidential death
Millard Filmore, 1850 -- Presidential death
Andrew Johnson, 1865 -- Presidential death
Chester Aurthur, 1881 -- Presidential death
Theodore Roosevelt, 1901 -- Presidential death
Calvin Coolidge, 1923 -- Presidential death
Harry Truman, 1945 -- Presidential death
Lyndon Johnson, 1963 -- Presidential death
Gerald Ford, 1974 -- Presidential resignation
As the White House website states, "The duties of the Vice President, outside of those enumerated in the Constitution, are at the discretion of the current President. Each Vice President approaches the role differently -- some take on a specialty portfolio, others serve simply as a top adviser to the President. Before the ratification of the 12th Amendment in 1804, electors only voted for President. The person who received the second greatest number of votes became Vice President.
